We hope to give our flock members the best home possible.
That's why we're building an outdoor aviary at the Priceless Parrot Preserve. This aviary has been a goal of ours for a long time and is integral to ensuring that our permanent flock members enjoy the enrichment they deserve. Although our flock members normally spend time outside of their cages daily and interact with one another as well as volunteers, an outdoor aviary allows them to live in a truly communal setting during warmer months, to have room to fly, and to have an environment closer to what they’d experience in the wild.
This isn't the first time we tried building an outdoor aviary. Our outdoor aviary was 75% complete when Hurricane Sandy hit. Being located on Long Island, we were one of the areas hardest hit by the hurricane. In addition to losing power, we lost our outdoor aviary.
We are happy to report that all of the structures for our outdoor aviary are now complete, using lessons used from our pre-Sandy aviary to help ensure that the new aviary will be more resilient to inclement weather. The aviary consists of eight large “rooms” so that we can group only those birds that get along in each room. There is a central walkway that closes on each side so parrots won’t escape when the internal doors are opened. We are now looking for ways to raise extra funds to furnish the aviaries with various wood perches, stands, and toys. We cannot wait to have our flock members enjoy this space in the spring, and we know the aviary will certainly enhance their lives at Priceless Parrot. We thank anyone who donated to our Groupon Grassroots campaign- funds from which were integral to making this possible.
